Proper pest identification is vital to developing a sound management plan. This process also leads to an increase in safe practices. This course will provide the definition and main characteristics of an insect are discussed. Insect life cycles are described and differentiated. The importance of this biological information is provided. Several orders of insects and their distinguishing characteristics are described. The pest group nematodes and their biology is described. Identification resources for nematodes are provided. The section then goes into pathogen identification with an emphasis on fungi as the target categories are most likely to encounter this type of pathogen. Resources for identification are provided. The concept of Integrated Pest Management is introduced. Ultimately, the link between IPM and safety is made.
